Surrealism was a Twentieth Century experimental movement in art that sought to release the creative potential of the subconscious mind. It is painted in a detailed manner to give a hallucinatory sense of reality by being shocking, disturbing, and unexplainable. Surrealism began in 1924 and ended in 1939. The style was influenced by the effects of World War I and influenced Abstract Expressionists. Surrealism still remains influential today.
